ROLES

Trustees

Gatwick Detainees Welfare Group (GDWG) is looking for additional trustees to support the work of the charity.

We visit asylum seekers and other migrants detained at the two Immigration Removal Centres based at Gatwick. Our five staff and 40 trained volunteers provide emotional and practical support for asylum seekers and other migrants detained at the two Immigration Removal Centres at Gatwick. Detention is a frightening experience. Some of those held are arrested on arrival in this country; many have been living here for years. They have no idea when they will be released as there is no time limit on immigration detention, unlike every other country in Europe. As well as befriending, we carry out casework for detainees, helping people to find and keep in touch with solicitors and other forms of support. We also work with other organisations to lobby for positive change in the way that people are dealt with within the detention system, and to call for an end to indefinite detention through many channels, including our Refugee Tales project.

GDWG is working to develop our services at a time of when more people are being held in immigration detention at Gatwick than ever before.

We are looking for potential new trustees with a range of skills and experience. In addition to applicants with experience and interest in supporting refugees, asylum seekers and immigration detainees, we would welcome trustees who have (for example) experience of working in the voluntary sector locally (Crawley), legal expertise, experience in business or the public sector, an academic or artistic background, or experience of undertaking research in the mental health field. We would welcome applications from people with a wide variety of backgrounds, and would be particularly pleased to hear from anyone with personal experience of being detained or who has been through the asylum process.

For more details about the AGM, or to discuss the role further and receive an application form, please contact *James Wilson at James@gdwg.org.uk or on 01293 657070, who will put you in contact with our Chair, Gemma Stockford.

The deadline for applications to the role is midnight at the end of Friday 2nd June.

Volunteers

We are also looking for volunteers for two roles with us: visitors and office caseworkers. We are based in Crawley but have volunteers travelling to us from across Sussex, Surrey and South London. If you are interested in finding out more please contact our administrator Izzie McIntosh at Isobel@gdwg.org.uk.
