Talks and Events
Alongside GDWG’s advocacy work, we work to create more understanding about the personal experiences of migration and immigration detention in the UK.
We often hear about immigration in the media. Yet, so many of us feel intimidated or confused by the terminology and laws in the news or are curious about learning more about the human impact of these stories.
GDWG staff and volunteers deliver free talks to people across a range of ages and experiences of migration in the UK; whether you are a teacher looking to talk with students about migration as part of PSHE, or a member of a group interested in exploring current affairs, we are happy to share the knowledge gained from our advocacy work and the perspectives shared in the Refugee Tales volumes to promote better awareness or address any questions you might have.
Are you interested in a session that might explore some of the below topics?:
Breaking down terminology and media narratives around migrants in the UK,
UK Immigration detention and its human impact,
The UK asylum process and the challenges people face while seeking safety,
The Brook House Public Inquiry and its findings,
Discussing Refugee Tales in a specific framework or context,
Please get in contact with us to organise a session that would support the learning of your students or peers.
Last year we spoke to a total of 2350 students, with groups ranging between 20 to 300 people. Our talks included school assemblies, seminars for sociology students, and sessions for university students studying to become secondary school teachers.
All of our talks are created with the interests and learning styles of the group in mind - we adapt to find what’s best for you and your students.
